The Humpback Whale Show in Moorea

A little history...

Thousands of humpback whales were killed in southern French Polynesia, in the mid-20th century. In less than 40 years (1920-1960), more than 2 million whales were killed worldwide, including about 200,000 humpback whales. About 97% of the world’s population of this species was slaughtered. In 1962, only 3% of its original number remained.

But today in French Polynesia, whales and all marine mammals can come to breed, give birth and for some settle down, in peace!

In 2002, one of the largest sanctuaries in the world was born with an ocean surface of 5 million square kilometres and 24 species of whales and dolphins, which characterizes a high biological diversity.

Moorea sister island of Tahiti, located in the heart of Polynesia, is famous for its paradisiacal landscapes and turquoise waters but also a privileged place for the observation of humpback whales. The opinions of travellers on the observation of these cetaceans in Polynesia are unanimous: it is an exceptional experience to live at least once in your life!

Every year, from July to November, humpback whales migrate from the south to warmer waters in Polynesia, to breed and give birth. It’s the perfect time for lovers of nature and marine wildlife to live a magical experience close to these giants of the seas.

An unforgettable sight

Whether from the coast or on a boat trip, you will be amazed by the parades of male whales that jump out of the water and hit the surface with their powerful fins. This grandiose show will leave you unforgettable memories.

Guided and strictly regulated excursions, allow you to approach the whales while respecting their space and tranquility. So, you can admire their imposing size and lightness in the water thanks to your guide approved by the Environment Directorate, and a distance of 100m from your boat. A one-on-one with these fascinating creatures and their breathtaking calves! Note that in adulthood, a whale measures on average 15 meters long and weighs at least 30 tons! It’s enough to feel tiny in front of such a fascinating animal.

Moorea, the whale sanctuary

A day out at sea looking for whales is an adventure like no other. You will board a boat specially designed for this type of excursion, accompanied by a guide passionate about marine wildlife.
