Whale-watching in Moorea is one of the most unforgettable marine experiences you can have in French Polynesia. From awe-inspiring encounters to respectful observation, these tours are designed to connect you with nature in the most meaningful way.

But what does a typical whale-watching excursion in Moorea actually look like? Here's everything you need to know.

📍 1. Meeting Point and Welcome

Most whale-watching tours begin early in the morning—between 7:00 and 8:00 AM—when the ocean is calmest. You’ll be welcomed by your guide and introduced to your small group of no more than 6 guests, creating a friendly, intimate atmosphere.

Safety Briefing

Before heading out, the guide will give a quick briefing about:

  • Boat safety

  • Proper behavior around whales

  • The legal and ethical guidelines for approaching marine mammals in French Polynesia

🐋 2. Searching for Whales

As the boat leaves the lagoon and heads toward deeper waters, the crew begins scanning the horizon. They're on the lookout for signs of whale activity, such as:

  • Blows (spouts of air and mist)

  • Tail slaps or breaches

  • Mother and calf pairs resting near the surface

This is a moment of quiet anticipation—eyes on the sea, hearts racing.

🌊 3. Respectful Approach

Once whales are spotted, the captain slowly navigates closer, maintaining a minimum 100-meter distance. If the animal seems relaxed and the conditions allow, the guide may propose entering the water.

Swimming with whales in Moorea is allowed only under strict rules:

  • The whale must show calm and non-evasive behavior

  • Visibility and sea conditions must be good

  • The number of swimmers is strictly limited

💡 It's important to note: encounters are never guaranteed—respecting the animal always comes first.

🤿 4. Getting in the Water

If all conditions are met, you'll be invited to slip quietly into the water with just mask, snorkel, and fins—no scuba gear, no noise.

Accompanied by your guide, you may be lucky enough to:

  • Float alongside a gentle giant, hearing its breath

  • Watch a calf playing near its mother

  • Listen to the haunting songs of a male through the water

It’s often described as a spiritual experience—humbling, emotional, and unforgettable.

📸 5. Returning to Shore

After about 3 hours at sea, the tour ends with a peaceful ride back to the lagoon. Some operators offer:

  • A quick swim in the shallow turquoise waters

  • Light refreshments

  • Sharing of photos or videos captured during the trip

The guides also take time to explain more about whale behavior, conservation efforts, and how guests can support ocean protection.

🌿 6. Ethical and Regulated Encounters

Moorea is one of the few places in the world where swimming with humpback whales is legal, but only under strict government regulation:

  • Certified guides only

  • Limited group sizes

  • Rules enforced to protect both animals and humans

Ultra Reef is deeply involved in local conservation, and some collaborate with marine researchers and NGOs.
